A local shop wins against online retailers on the searches where the customer wants the product today, close by, and from someone they can talk to. Local SEO for retail stores is how you show Google that your shop fits those searches. This guide is for retailers in Busselton, Bunbury, Dunsborough and Margaret River who sell from a real storefront and want more people walking through the door.
Where a Local Shop Beats an Online Store
You will not beat a national marketplace on range, so compete on what a parcel cannot offer. Online buying keeps growing. Australia Post's 2026 eCommerce Report, as reported by Parcel and Postal Technology International, put Australian online spending at A$82.6 billion in 2025, up 13.9% on the year before. Western Australia alone reached A$9.1 billion, and the average shopper bought from 16 different online brands. People are comparing more than ever, and your shop needs to be in that comparison.
Three things work in your favour:
- Today: the customer can walk out with the product, with no delivery wait and no return postage.
- Nearby: a gift shop in Dunsborough or a bike shop in Bunbury is closer than any warehouse.
- Certainty: shoppers can see, try and ask questions before they pay.
Local SEO puts you in front of people searching with that intent, such as "surf shop near me", "homewares Busselton" or "bike shop open now".
How Google Chooses Which Shop to Show
Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. It also states there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, so the work is about giving Google accurate information and real signs that people know your shop.
| Factor | What Google says | What a shop can do |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well your profile matches what someone is searching for | Pick the right category and describe what you sell in detail |
| Distance | How far you are from the person searching | Keep your address and map pin accurate, since you cannot move closer |
| Prominence | How well known you are, including links from other websites and your reviews | Earn reviews, reply to them and get listed on local websites |
Everything below feeds one of those three. Our Google Business Profile optimization guide covers every profile field in detail. Here we only cover what changes for a shop.
Get the Shop Basics Right First
Complete, accurate information is the cheapest ranking improvement a shop has. Google's help pages say businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local results. For a shop, check these first:
- Your full address, because customers can visit you in person.
- Your regular hours and special hours for public holidays and summer trading.
- The business category that matches what you mainly sell.
- Attributes such as parking, so people know it is easy to stop.
- Photos and videos of your storefront, shelves and best sellers.
Wrong hours do real damage. A visitor from out of town who finds a locked door on a long weekend does not come back, and may leave a review about it.
Show What You Have in Stock
If you sell products with barcodes, you can show your in-store stock on Google for free. Google says in-store products can appear in search results and on your Business Profile, so customers know what you sell and whether it is available before they visit. Free local listings can also show your products on Search, Maps and the Products tab, including a "See what's in store" view when someone searches your shop's name.
Australia is one of the eligible countries. According to Google's Business Profile Help, you need all of the following:
| Requirement | What it means for your shop |
|---|---|
| Physical storefront | Shoppers can buy your products in person |
| Verified Business Profile | You are signed in to the account that manages it |
| Manufacturer barcodes | Products carry UPC or EAN barcodes. If you print your own labels, keep the original barcode on the product and scan both at the till |
| POS system or scanner | Google's Local Inventory app works with many systems, including Square, Clover and Lightspeed |
| Eligible store type | Some categories, such as tobacco, have display restrictions |
If your point of sale system does not connect, you can add products one at a time with Google's Product Editor. Even a short list of your best sellers helps a shopper decide to visit you instead of ordering online.
Use Reviews to Build Prominence
Reviews are the most visible sign that real customers shop with you. Google says prominence is partly based on how many reviews you have, and that more positive ratings can help your local ranking. It also says replying to reviews shows you value feedback.
For a shop, the easiest moment to ask is at the counter, right after someone says they love what they bought. Reply to every review in your own words, including the unhappy ones. Our article on online reviews and local trust explains what customers look for before they choose a business.
Make Your Website Back Up the Shop
Your website should confirm what your profile says and give Google more to match. Keep it simple:
- A store page with your address, opening hours, phone number and a map.
- A page for each main product category, written for local searches, for example "bikes and e-bikes in Bunbury".
- Fast loading on a phone, so a shopper checking you from the footpath is not left waiting.
- A clear note if you offer click and collect or local delivery.
